Umbwe Routes
A Explore. Connect. Turn your challenge into a triumph
he Umbwe Route is considered the most challenging and steepest route on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a direct but demanding climb for experienced and fit trekkers. Starting on the southern side of the mountain, this trail is short and steep, with dramatic landscapes and a sense of adventure not found on other routes.
The trek begins in lush rainforest and quickly ascends into moorland and alpine desert. With fewer climbers on the trail, Umbwe offers solitude and breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s southern face. The route joins the Machame or Western Breach paths at higher altitudes before reaching Kibo Hut, the base for the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
The Umbwe Route is typically completed in 6 or 7 days, with careful acclimatization essential due to the steep ascent. Its short but intense nature makes it suitable for adventurous, fit climbers seeking a challenging yet rewarding experience.

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. At Stella Point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!
From the summit we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. We arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.
